CHILD WELFARE

child welfare, services and institutions concerned with the physical, social, and psychological well-being of children, particularly children suffering from the effects of poverty or lacking normal parental care and supervision.

Two main types of child welfare services:-

Public child welfare agencies provide four main sets of services—child protection investigation, family-centered services and supports, foster care, and adoption.

Child protection investigation:-

The purpose of the investigation is to learn if a child has been harmed or is at risk of harm, reduce the risk and increase the safety of the child, determine if a criminal action has occurred, and determine the need for services to support the family.

Family centered services:-

Family-centered practice is a way of working with families, both formally and informally, across service systems to enhance their capacity to care for and protect their children.

Women and child welfare:-

The scheme started in 1975 with the objective to give special coverage to slums in urban areas. The scheme also envisages delivery of an integrated package of services consisting of immunization, health check-ups, nutrition and health education and refreshment services to child and pregnant women.
